SPREADSHEET GUIDE · BUDGETS

Build a budget that shows what's changing.

Compare planned and actual costs without manually recalculating every line. A budget is most useful when the categories, totals and assumptions stay visible.

Set up a practical budget workbook

  1. Use clear categories such as income, payroll, supplies, software, travel and other costs.
  2. Keep planned and actual amounts in separate columns.
  3. Calculate variance so overspending and underspending stand out.
  4. Include a totals section and a dated reporting period.
  5. Keep blank cells distinct from zero values, and test any formulas with example numbers.

Example request to start with

“Create an Excel monthly small-business budget with editable income and expense categories, budget versus actual columns, variance formulas, a yearly summary and a simple chart. Don't invent any financial amounts.”

Generated spreadsheets are calculation aids. Check formulas and totals before using them for financial decisions.
