SPREADSHEET GUIDE · TIME TRACKING

A timesheet that adds up the week for you.

Record start, end and break times once, and let formulas total daily and weekly hours. A good timesheet makes overtime and missing days obvious before payroll runs.

What a useful timesheet includes

  1. Employee name, pay period and the date the workweek starts.
  2. A row per day with start time, end time and unpaid break minutes.
  3. Daily hours calculated from those times, not typed by hand.
  4. A weekly total, with regular hours and hours over 40 shown separately.
  5. Space for employee and supervisor sign-off.

Under federal law, non-exempt employees generally earn overtime at one and a half times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states have stricter daily rules, so check yours.

Example request to start with

“Create an Excel weekly timesheet for 6 employees with start, end and break columns, daily and weekly hour totals, overtime over 40 hours shown separately, and a signature line. Leave the names blank.”

Generated timesheets are calculation aids. Confirm overtime and pay rules for your state before running payroll.
